A home gym will help you stay in shape without signing up to a fitness club. Find out what you need in a home gym and how much preparing the necessary space will cost.

Will a home gym do the job?

A home gym has a number of advantages. First of all, you can save a lot of time. Many people go to the gym before or after work. On top of the time you actually spend at the gym, don’t forget about the time spent travelling there and back, often in traffic jams.

It also gives you more freedom. Thanks to your very own home gym, you can have your workout whenever it suits you. You don’t have to wait until someone else has finished using the equipment you want to use, so you can put more effort into concentrating on your workout, rather than waiting in line or looking for alternative machines.

A home gym is also more convenient. If you don’t like exercising in front of strangers, then investing in home gym equipment will be a good idea. Not to mention the aspect of hygiene. You will be the only person using your gym, or at most you will be sharing it with other members of your household.

Home gym equipment

At this point you are probably wondering – what equipment do I need for a home gym? A lot depends on the amount of space you have. If you live in a small apartment, buying a large workout station may not be very practical. However, you can put together a list of necessary home gym equipment that will not take up half of your bedroom or living room.

So, what is the best equipment for a home gym? A definite must-have is a pull-up bar. It won’t take up much space, as it is mounted high up.

Before deciding which model you want, consider the mounting methods and handles. For example, the Gymrex exercise bar is attached to the ceiling, which is generally more convenient than wall-mounted bars. In addition, it has as many as six non-slip handles, giving you more variety in your workouts and letting you target different muscle groups.

Whether you want to strengthen your core, work off those extra pounds or relax your muscles, this 49.5 x 30 cm Vibration Machine with twist function or this 53 x 37 cm Vibration Machine works minor miracles in just 15 minutes!

If you’re after bigger arms, then it’s worth considering a preacher curl bench to work on your biceps. It doesn’t take up much space, and it’s safe and easy to use. Before buying one, make sure it has height adjustment and a barbell holder.

What else do you need for your home gym? An exercise bench will come in very useful, as it’s great for a full body workout. After use, just fold it and store it under your bed or in the wardrobe.

This 400 x 100 x 20 cm Inflatable Gym Mat is the ultimate training tool for professional gyms, dance or martial arts schools and gymnastics clubs, as well as for home use. Whether school sports, yoga, cheerleading, floor gymnastics or kung fu: This non-slip white/blue 500 x 100 x 10 cm inflatable or grey/pink or grey/green tumbling mat ensures safe and injury-free training. This inflatable grey/pink 600 x 100 x 20 cm gym mat or grey/green can be inflated within just 30 seconds and the degree of hardness can be individually adjusted via the air pressure up to a maximum of 0.7 bar to suit a wide variety of exercises.

A garage gym

A garage gym is a good idea if you want to use more equipment. In addition, the equipment itself can also be bigger than that you would use in an apartment.

If you set up a gym in your garage, you can buy separate equipment for different muscle groups, or one or two more versatile pieces of equipment. Just like in a home gym, an exercise bench will also be useful. With the extra space, you can choose a more advanced model, with a leg press and preacher curl bench. A cable pulley would be a great addition to the bench.

Also consider a weight rack. It doesn’t take up much space, but it makes it much easier to keep your gym tidy. For example the GR-PL350 weight rack by the German brand Gymrex lets you store dumbbells and plates weighing up to 350 kg, while the non-slip legs and rubber pads will keep the weights in place.

If you have a lot of space for your home or garage gym, you could consider a universal workout station. It combines different exercise equipment, for example an incline bench, upper and lower pulleys, chest press, preacher curl bench and leg and abdomen trainers.

The adjustable sit-up bench from Gymrex is a versatile training aide for the entire upper body. With adjustment options and handles for push-ups, the padded sit-up bench is the perfect support for exercises such as bench presses, dumbbell rows, pullovers, sit-ups and push-ups.

The adjustable Roman chair with 120 kg capacity from Gymrex is an efficient and safe training aide for a strong back and a streamlined silhouette. Height, angle and leg rests can be individually adjusted for any height and exercise—this equipment guarantees a safe and ergonomic workout and rapid effects!

How much does a home gym cost?

The prices of home gym equipment can vary. A very basic home gym could cost less than £100.

For example, a pull-up bar mounted to the wall or ceiling could start at as little as £20. A good exercise bench for home use will put you back around £40-£50, and a weight rack with a high load capacity will be somewhere in the area of £60-£80. A universal workout station will cost somewhat more, usually around £300.

As you can see, a home gym requires a relatively small budget, and you can expand it over time depending on your needs. Will it pay off? The basic list of equipment will cost as much as one or two months gym membership, while the more expensive option will still cost less than a half-year membership. In addition to this, a home gym will let you save not only time, but also money spent travelling to the gym and back.

A home gym without equipment

What if you simply don’t have space for any equipment? You can also work out without any gym equipment. However, there are a few things that would come in very handy, but do not take up any space.

A fitness mat is a good example. It will let you have a comfortable workout on your own floor. The mat will both protect you from the floor, and protect the floor from you! You can also use the mat together with equipment, protecting the floor from being scratched or damaged.

A weighted vest, such as the GR-WW 10 by Gymrex, is a great solution if you want to burn calories faster and increase your endurance. You can use it at home, but also outdoors, for example while jogging. After use, you can just keep it in your wardrobe.

To summarise

A home gym has plenty of advantages. It lets you save not only time, but also money. The necessary equipment will cost as much as one to a few months membership at your local gym. Another advantage of a small home or garage gym is more freedom as to when you can have your workout. Access 24/7 can also motivate you to work out more often and more effectively.
