The MMA welding device SMMA-200PI uses bipolar transistor technology with a 80% duty cycle.
The Insulated Gate Bi-polar Transistor (IGBT) is a semiconductor device, which is increasingly used in the field of the power electronics. IGBT combines the benefits of the bipolar transistor (e.g. good crossover response, high reverse voltage, robustness for welding devices) with the advantages of the field effect transistor (almost powerless control). Additionally, the advantage of using this technology in our MMA welding device SMMA-200PI lies in the high prevention of short circuits as the IGBT limits the load current.
IGBT’s are an advancement of the vertical power MOSFET’s.
IGBT = insulated-gate bipolar transistor. IGBT is a bipolar transistor with an insulated gate electrode. This semi-conducting device is being increasingly used in power electronics because it combines the advantages of two transistor types: the easy controls of the field effect transistor and the fast switching and high breakdown voltage of the bipolar transistor. The IGBT also offers some robustness against short circuits because it limits the electrical continuity. IGBTs are a further development of MOSFET technology.
Powerful fans ensure an optimal removal of heat from the unit.
This device works with a 1-phase connection (230 V +/- 10 %).
Through automatically boosting the tension at the ignition of the arc, this function facilitates the electrical arc ignition. After ignition, the unit automatically returns to the pre-set voltage.
The current value increases automatically when the arc is shorter.
This function helps to prevent overheating of the electrode by switching off the welding current when the electrode sticks to the material.

The LED light indicates overheating or a malfunction.
