Do you like home movie marathons more than going to the cinema, but miss the fresh and warm popcorn? Or maybe you’re looking for a new snack to add to your restaurant or food truck menu? Find out how to make popcorn that tastes like it does at the movies.

What type of corn do you need?

Homemade popcorn can actually be both a healthy and tasty snack. Loved by children and adults alike, film evenings with friends and family are not the same without it. It has more nutritional value than crisps, and, if well prepared, can be just as tasty.

However, in order not to end up with popcorn full of preservatives and artificial flavour enhancers, it is best to avoid ready-made popcorn or grains for preparing in the microwave. The best solution are certified organic products, although ordinary grains without any additives will also be ok. Read on and find out how to prepare popcorn.

How to prepare good-quality popcorn – choose your favourite additions

How is popcorn made? Start off by preparing all the necessary ingredients. You will need corn kernels, fat and some salt, and if you are a real popcorn fan you could also have a variety of additions to add some flavour to your snack.

Butter popcorn

How to make butter popcorn. The recipe for butter popcorn is relatively simple, because you will only need corn kernels, butter (remember to choose clarified butter that will not burn) and salt (unless you prefer your popcorn without it).

Cheese popcorn

Making cheese popcorn is a bit more difficult. First of all, only harder types of cheese, such as Grana Padano or Parmesan cheese, are suitable – other cheeses could clump together under the high temperature and spoil the effect. There is also another way to make cheese-flavoured popcorn – try adding a few teaspoons of inactive yeast flakes!

Caramel popcorn

Do you prefer sweeter snacks? If so, then caramel popcorn could be the best choice. In this case, you will need to prepare the popcorn and the caramel separately, and combine the two ingredients at the end. To make the caramel, melt cane sugar with butter and add a pinch of salt and soda, once the mixture is smooth – then stir vigorously. Combine the caramel with the popcorn and wait for it to solidify – it will then be ready to serve. If you want your popcorn to be crispier, you can bake it in the oven.

How to make popcorn with that cinema taste

There are several ways to make popcorn. Fortunately, each of them is straightforward and shouldn’t be much of a challenge.

How to make popcorn in a pot or pan

You can make popcorn in virtually any kitchen with basic kitchen equipment. Other than the ingredients, you will only need a pot or pan with a lid, and a heating hob. Add the fat to the pan so that it covers the entire bottom after melting – this could be clarified butter, olive oil or coconut oil. Heat the fat to a high temperature, then throw the corn kernels into the pan and cover it with a lid. When the kernels starts popping, turn the heat under the pot down a bit and wait for it to fill up with tasty popcorn!

How to make popcorn in an oven or microwave

Many people wonder how to make popcorn in the oven. Unfortunately, this is not the best method – the corn kernels will roast for a very long time and unevenly, so you might not be satisfied with the results. However, you can easily make popcorn in the microwave.

As we already mentioned, popcorn grains intended for microwaves are usually not a good idea, because they often contain various artificial additives. To prepare popcorn in this way, you will need a large microwaveable bowl and a plate to cover it. Select the maximum power of the microwave – with 1000W it should last approx. 3 minutes.

How to make salty popcorn in a popcorn maker?

Popcorn makers are not only for commercial use in cinemas or catering. You will more and more often find compact versions of this type of equipment for home use, letting you prepare delicious cinema-style popcorn in your own home. Popcorn prepared in this way can be a great attraction for children’s events, just like candy floss.

Making popcorn in a popcorn maker will take less than a minute. This method is by far the most effective – the corn kernels are less likely to burn, and you will hardly have any left that did not pop. It is the easiest way to prepare this special treat for your friends and family. What’s more, it will be healthy and fat-free, unless you want to make butter popcorn, in which case just add some melted butter to the ready-made portion of popcorn.

Popcorn in catering

Are you planning to open a small catering business and wondering if a professional popcorn maker is a good idea? It will make your job much easier in many cases. Popcorn will be popular in pubs and bars, but not only.

How to make popcorn summary

Making popcorn is not only a great idea for a tasty and relatively healthy snack at home – it can also become part of your catering offer. Commercial popcorn makers are not expensive, ranging from under a hundred to several hundred pounds, so you will usually have a quick return on investment. Models for home use are even cheaper, while making popcorn using basic kitchen equipment bears hardly any cost at all. Enjoy the taste of perfect popcorn at home, and turn every family movie night into a fantastic event for both children and adults.
