Ozone treatment is one of the most effective methods of disinfecting rooms. Read our article and find out which ozone generator to choose for your car, and which one for your home or business. In addition, we will compare the advantages of their use in cleaning and transport companies, as well as workshops. We will also have a look at with parameters to pay attention to when choosing an ozone generator.

What are ozone generators used for?

Ozone generators  are used to clean the air in rooms from unpleasant odours, bacteria, allergens and mould spores. Generators can come in handy in a number of different types of places. In medicine and the food & beverage industry they ensure a high level of hygiene, and professional cleaning companies use them when cleaning after a fire or flooding. They are also ideal for disinfecting private homes.

How do ozone generators work?

Ozone generators produce ozone by breaking apart oxygen molecules into single atoms, which then attach to other oxygen molecules in the air to form ozone. They draw air into the fan through a filter, which is then passed on further. The oxygen molecules are separated by electrical discharges thanks to a special plate. This then releases ozone. Regardless of which ozone generator you choose for your car, home or business, it will work according to the principle described above. Some models are additionally equipped with a UV lamp, which enhances the effect of the emitted gas thanks to its biocidal properties.

Which ozone generator should you choose and what should you pay attention to?

If you are wondering which ozone generator to buy, you should first of all pay attention to the parameters, which should be in line with your needs. The most important value given by producers is the nominal ozone efficiency given in mg/h. It indicates how much ozone the generator produces during one hour of use. For small spaces, such as a car, generators with a capacity of at least 5000 mg/h are well suited. For large rooms, in turn, the ideal efficiency would be around 15,000 mg/h.

The size of the generator also influences its efficiency. After checking how much ozone the generator produces, you should consider which ozone generator to choose for a room of a given size. You will need a different model for a small apartment than in the case of a large production facility. When analysing the parameters, pay attention to the fan efficiency. It indicates the circulation efficiency during the ozonation process and is most often shown in cum/h.

Types of ozone generators depending on their use

Ozone generators are designed for a strictly defined purpose – purifying air from unpleasant odours, bacteria, allergens and mould spores. However, their exact purpose depends on the parameters. Some ozone generators are perfect for industrial and professional use, others for private homes or vehicles.

Which ozone generator will be best for a transport company?

If you want to buy an ozone generator for a transport company, you will first need to know which one is best for using in a vehicle. It will be used not only to remove unpleasant odours from the car’s interior, but also antibacterial cleaning. To do so, direct the ozone generator outlet to the place of the air being sucked into the air conditioning system, and then turn on the air supply with internal circulation (maximum power, lowest temperature).

The air conditioning in cars should be looked after throughout the year, so it is worth repeating in both summer and winter. The driver’s cab in a lorry or the interior of a taxi require special attention due to their regular use, so every transport company should be equipped with an ozone generator. A model with a capacity of at least 5000 mg/h is recommended, so as to allow for undergoing the whole process in a relatively short time.

Which ozone generator is best for a cleaning company?

The needs here will depend on the type of places cleaned. The difference could be between cleaning large houses, private apartments or after a fire or flooding. First of all, you will need generators that are sufficient for large spaces. It often happens that thorough cleaning combined with disinfection is required not only by places affected by such natural disasters as fires, but also badly neglected places that need to be refreshed.

For professional use you will need ozone generators with a larger capacity, e.g. 20,000 mg/h. Ideally they should work in several modes covering different areas, including less than 10,000 cubic feet and in the ranges of 10,000 – 15,000 cubic feet and 15,000 – 20,000 cubic feet. Ozone generators usually have a compact and handy design, although models with handles will be best for professional use.

Which ozone generator is best for private homes and workshops?

Ozone generators are not only intended for professional use. They are also useful in private homes, including home workshops. They are especially recommended for allergy sufferers, people with respiratory diseases and newly-born babies. They are also good for refreshing the air in unused property, e.g. intended for rent.

If you are wondering which ozone generator to choose for a private home, you should also compare the parameters. They do not have to be the same as in the case of professional equipment, but efficiency is still important. Remember that higher efficiency means faster ozone treatment. Many models have a timer for setting the working time. Small rooms (e.g. kitchens or bathrooms) only need to be treated for several minutes, while larger ones will require up to two hours (depending on the model).

Ozone generators are not the only equipment that help maintain a high level of hygiene at home. Clothes steamers are similar devices, although used mainly for clothes.

Which ozone generator should you buy – summary

Although each device will fulfil its basic purpose, not every model will be efficient and optimal for a given space. Which ozone generator is best for cars and which for private homes? This is the main point to consider. You should think about how you intend to use the ozone generator before you start comparing the available models. Also be sure to take into account the size of the room or rooms you want to treat with ozone. Then compare the performance and circulation of chosen models, and also check if these models have additional functions such as a timer, working time selection or UV light (built-in lamp). If you are often wondering how to efficiently and properly disinfect your home, company or car, an ozone generator will be the ideal choice.
